Milking Dolly, but she's not happy. She has mastitis in the back left quarter, the same quarter all the cows get it :(. Her boy-calf, still unnamed, is fairly stupid. OK, very stupid. The only way I can get him to drink from mum is to grab him, straddle him holding his head in an extended position, use my thumb to force his mouth open and stick the bottle teat inside, then push it in, pull it out, push it in and pull it out, not all the way, to get him to suck. Then he moves around mum looking for a teat which I have to help him find and stick it in his mouth. She gives him encouraging grunting noises and stands while he mills around. If our previous bull-calf wasn't called Doofus, I'd seriously call her calf Doofus.
I took them back to the pasture yesterday, and then really struggled to get her to come for milking. So this morning I loaded him into the back of the buggy and she followed back down ro the lower barn. She wasn't eating out in the pasture, just staying with her boy-calf who was lying next to her. Took out some hay for her, but she wouldn't eat any. She won't eat any grain in the milking stall either. She's not a happy girl. Opened a fresh bale for her after milking this morning, and she ate ! Yippee.
