Farm dogs
We started with one dog, a little Yorkshire Terrier / Maltese Poodle (Yorki-Poo) designer dog mix, Sargeant, so named because of Sargeant York (not sure who that is, but it is a good name for our dog). Herbie asked that we please get some worker dogs before buying more animals, so we found Anni and Fletch, two Border Collies. Rosco (in the photo above with Izzy, our 1st bummer lamb) is a Great Pyrenees Mountain dog, who is supposed to live with the sheep and alpacas to protect them from the coyotes we sometimes hear, but the alpacas want to stomp him to death, and he chases the sheep, so he was confined to the lower barn enclosure during the day and has the run of the farm at night. He learnt about the electric fence, I found him in the vegetable garden one morning, and had to open the gate to let him out ! Seems he chased something in, and was shocked on entry, and wouldn't leave ! If only it worked on the sheep ! Rosco has settled well, and no longer has a go at the customers, although those that are scared of him seem to be fair game, plus he chases cars down the driveway. Cured Anni from doing it, now he does.
Fletch took to killing our chickens, with Anni helping him, so Herbie took him to live with on a dairy farm down in Westphalia.
Anni and Fletch bred in 2012, she is a long-haired Border Collie, he is a short-haired, and she delivered 8 puppies on December 5, 2012. 3 girls and 5 boys, all sold, so Anni carried the farm through February 2013. Hopefully she is bred again this December for Valentines Day 2014 puppies. Papa is a red and white male, so looks as if some of the puppies may be tri-colour. 3 are already spoken for, one (a girl) to the papas' family, and then 2 boys, one to Amy and one to Bert. Unfortunately she didn't take, so our Anni girl is awaiting her next heat when we'll try again.
The vet put Sarge down on July 4, 2013 after he ran into the sickle mower blade while I was cutting hay. Bye bye little buddy, you will be missed.
