Been a gray and very chilly day, with rain on and off. Really yucky.
Let the cows into the one new pasture this morning as we were running really low on hay. They just went munching away, only Shaw ran around kicking his heels up.
This afternoon a friend of a friend sold me 2 bales, at $15 each over the price he'd offered the bales to my friends' dad. This really knocks ones confidence in other farmers. Went to my usual hay guy afterwards, to take photos of his trailer which he was going to rent to us so I could pick up 12 bales from Herbies' cousin Dave up in Sterling tomorrow, and he called another Saranac farmer who sold their cows late last year as they also had hay. He wants $50 - $60 for last years' first cutting ! My guy told him I bought from him (I just checked - $3,305 this past season) and what he'd been charging me ! Told him I had $500 for as much hay as it'd buy !
Had a bit of fun yesterday. Went over to Jackies and we went to the cheese factory to get cheese. $20 for a 5lb block of sharp, white cheddar, 1lb mozzerella and some buttermilk. We also stopped at a few antique stores, and a Mennonite house or 3, one of their shops and a greenhouse. I needed some raw sugar, and Jackie got some sliced meat. Jackie knows all the back roads, so it's always fun as I see places I wouldn't normally see, at least not on purpose :).
The lambs are huge. They are funny, we give them a long drink of milk until they stand in a stupor. They then go curl up together and sleep, under the heat lamp in the garage, or on a step in the sun. Then when they've napped, they go to attack my roses. Have to watch the little so and so's. Hugh stays in the sheep pen longer then Niece, but I think it's just because he's more stupid. She goes low, under the bar of the fence, he tries to go over and then can only keep his back, or front feet on the ground, not all four. Stays like that, looking pitifully at me until I rescue him. Anni has found her calling. Watched her chasing the boy twin lambs around and around the fence until they find their way back in.
When I got back tonight with the hay, went to fetch the cows out of the fresh pasture. Enticed them out with the grain bucket, felt like a heel closing the gates behind them, but they're very hard in the ground if left in too long.
Teri came and dropped off some comfrey for Jackie, gallon wine jugs and egg cartons. Will come get eggs on Sunday. When I drove past their house on the way to get the hay, saw Teri cleaning up in their garden and I tootled the hooter.
Talking to another guy from CL about switching wood for hay. A bit of work on my side with the chainsaw, but could work out well for hay.
On another note, had a bit of a chuckle the other day. Someone was bemoaning dishonest people, the same someone I can't believe anything from as it all is lies, all the time, about everything.
Herbie and I will have our 5th wedding aniversary later this month. Need to look up the traditional 5th year gift. I thank God for my hardworking, wonderful, gorgeous husband. I'm a very lucky woman. His company gave him some vouchers for movies and a meal, so we will be having a date night next week. It also means he's done with alimony :).
In the process of renewing my green card, expensive business ! Ideally would like a part-time job, either half a day, or a few days each week, not another executive position. Would like to have the same days off as Herbie. With the economy being a little stronger, maybe I can find something out there, not too far from home. Wish me luck.
