Woke relatively early (at least for me) before 8 am this morning with Bambi moo-ing up a storm. Lost Mabel again. I layered up, thermals, jeans, flannel, insulated coveralls, jacket, hoodie with ear-flaps, gloves, double socks and boots and went out to re-unite them again. Bambi was in the vegetable garden with the other cows, Mabel was lying down at the back of the channel, sort-of behind the pond. She didn't respond to Bambis' calls, just lay there. Walked around her and chivvied her down the channel, with mama encouraging her all the way. She drank immediately, wonder how long they were separated this time. While I was sorting out the extension cords, Bambi lost her again. She's short so mama couldn't see her standing in the soyabeans and other growth, but she was happy with Big Red. Pearl was unhappy as well, looked straight at me and moo-ed again and again. OK girl, I know you are thirsty, I'm moving as fast as I can. Having 4 lactating cows means fresh water doesn't last long out there. Have 3 troughs for them, but only 1 defroster, so am circulating it amongst them. Broke one trough with my foot, and accidently got my whole foot wet, yuck, but finished up. Took a while to get my cold foot back up to body temperature once I was back in the house. Just stood in the basement and put my wet insulated overalls, jeans, thermals and socks straight into the washing machine.
Found the boot drier down in the basement, the one where you upend the wet boots over it and it sends out warm air to dry them. Put it up for DHs boots so that they'd be warm for him to put on when he had to go to work. Also started his car when he went to shower so that it'd be warm and defrosted. Little things that keep him a little warmer. I ate the last of Jackies oxtail soup for breakfast, made scrambled eggs and toast for DH when he came downstairs. He arrived home after 4am again this morning, I went to sleep at around 3am, so I'm functioning on 5 hours sleep. But, it's Friday for us ! Whooppeeee ! And according to the weatherman, we should get up to freezing on Saturday. Currently 28 degrees, which is 7 degrees warmer than our overnight cold. As DH said last year (and the year before etc etc) outside is colder than inside the freezer !
Spoke to his sister Julie this morning, what am I to take for Christmas lunch. She and DH decided I was to make pie. A milktart, an apple pie and a pumpkin pie ! Surprised he didn't want a pecan one too, but I won't mention it otherwise he will.
I've been coughing again, until my head hurts.
