Planted the replacement apricot tree today. It's 3 x the size of the one that died. Dug it out with a long, narrow spade, poured some epsom salts in the hole and put the new tree in, stamped it down, watered it well.
Then I took the one bee-hive apart. There's lots of honey in it, and dead bees. A mouse or 2 made a nest in the lower box over Winter which I threw out. Put it all back together as I didn't want any ither animals earing the honey or rain getting in but need to clean the honey extractor and spin the sweetness out. Wow, honey and maple syrup from the farm. Not enough to sell, but enough for us methinks.
After chores this morning, Herbie and I went morel hunting. I found 1, he didn't find any :(. Came back to the house and I cooked breakfast - eggs, morels fried in butter, sauted potatoes, buttered toast and sausage for Herbie, potatoes, morels and a fried egg on Eziekiel toast and cheese for me. Discovered I was supposed to cut the morels in half lengthwise to wash out any additional protein or grit. I had really shaken them well as I wanted to spread the spores, but they were a little crunchy. Herbie wasn't going to say anything :)
Herbie moved the horse bale feeder to the lower part of the enclosure and have them a fresh bale. Took a little while for them to find it.
Hugh still kept getting out the sheep enclosure so I watched him from the garage, then blocked the 2 places, one with a board, the other with a plank and a rock. He can still push through the top section but can't get his hips through. Funny to watch him see-sawing, complaining loudly. Had to push him back.
Learnt a lesson today. Don't offer pricing on animals before they are physically born and ready to go. Shorted myself by over $700 on 4 sheep as the pricing is much stronger than it was last year, and the one boy is polled, meaning he has no horns, so he's worth much more. Meat prices have risen which was expected after the big sell-offs last year due to shortages of feed because of the drought. I remember buying my first ewe lamb for $300, and the 1st boy for $200 about 4 years ago. Nice that pricing is getting back up there.
