Made a batch of Monkey Butter today, and 1 quart jar of little yellow pear tomatoes. Used my new Tattler re-usable lids for the first time, and am a little apprehensive as the FB canning page I joined has had 3 people with failures of these lids sealing in the past few days. It's a lot of work to lose through seal failure. I believe there is a bit of a learning curve to using them. I would like to change to them as finances allow, but won't gift any jars with them as they are rather expensive to give away. So will still use the one-use ones for some of my efforts. The orange tomato jam is still cooking down ! They have so much liquid it's taken 24 hours on High so far in the crockpot, lost about 2 inches of water so far and probably has another 2 to 3 inches to go. Wow. Coming from very dry South Africa, I marvel at the quantity of water in the fruit and vegetables here !
Found some of the missing eggs today. They were laying in the middle of one of my whiskey barrel planters outside the garage, well hidden by the Sweet Annie that Jackie gave me. Earlier this evening, I had to shoo a rooster out from laying in there ! Found another egg.
Chuck, the boy calf, is being very naughty. He has taken to climbing into the round bale hay feeder. Found him sleeping in it tonight. Shoo-ed him out twice before that, and see that he has pooped in it, which means he has probably pee'd in it too. Great. Now Bambi, Mabel and Starlet as well as him, won't eat it. And hay is expensive, the little bugger. Larry, please come soon to fetch your calves !!
The biltong is drying, but rather slowly as it is so hot and humid here. Seemingly part of the country is under snow, and my dad said that Tennessee is expecting cold weather (for Tennessee :) ) on Sunday but I've seen no indication in our forecasts of bad weather heading our way, although I have seen that the soil temperature is dropping about 3 degrees F each day.
Well, it's off to bed with me. Got to bed at 3am this morning after DH arrived home, and expect him around the same time tonight.
