Got home, unpacked the car of our order, and Jackie and Garys' order, parked and then the vet arrived. First went to look at Gabriel. He had broken the windows from both sides of the trailer, bent the bars, ripped the channels out. Whooppee. Drs Sandford and Jeffers looked at him after roping his horns to try and keep his head immobile. She gave him a shot, while Dr Jeffers and I went down to the lower barn to pregnancy check Star, Dolly and Daisy May. Star and Dolly no problem, they each went up into their milking stalls where I attached them to the wall with some grain in the feeders. Daisy May was milling around the lower barn. I closed the roll-up door, and we danced around a while. She hopped over the truck liner, and ended up in the small area with all the glass doors and windows I've been collecting. Dr Jeffers stuck his arm up Star, she's 4 months pregnant, so due mid to end February. He then checked Dolly, but she was undetectable. So, either she's open, ie not preggers, or she's only a month preggers. Let's hope it's the latter. Daisy May moved up into the milk parlour, so I shut the gate trapping her up there. She went in next to Star, and Dr Jeffers stuck his hand up her and she lunged under Dollys' neck. I stepped closer to make her move backwards, but the doc had lost his place, so he tried again. Success, she's 6 months pregnant. Whooppee. A mid December calf. Hope it's a heifer, a little polled girl like her grandma, Buttercup.
Went back out to check on Gabriel and Dr Sanford. She'd given him a tranq shot, but he wasn't a happy boy. He had 2 ropes tied around him, one around his horns, the other as a halter which was tied around the centre pole of the trailer with me hanging onto them for dear life. Befuddled both vets as to what is wrong with him. It's not hard or attached to his jaw, loose yet solid. Took a syringe and drew some out, looked like water, no smell, so not a saliva gland infection. Took a stool sample for culturing, but after I dewormed them I don't think parasites will be an issue. He hasn't lost weight, so, I'll watch him and see if it gets better. Untied him and opened the trailer ramp, and he stumbled out, nearly fell down the ramp, turned around and got into the pasture. Then he lay down, and was still there doped up when I checked on him an hour later. Poor baby.
Then we went to take blood from the sheep. Did Prince first. Dr Sanford had major difficulty in taking his blood. Bent a needle, a few cc's in one vial, then some more in another so between the 2 got a whole vial. The girls went easier. Poured some corn on the ground for them, and then just caught them one-by-one for their blood taking, Dr Jeffers holding them with me helping, Dr Sanford doing the actual needle work, with me catching the next one to be done. Did 7, the ram Prince and then the 6 girls, Lacey, Buttercup, Strawberry, Liquorice, Wanda and Ruthie. Need to double check exactly what tests I need to send for, then off to the post office tomorrow. It's taken a while, but it's done. I told Daron that the vet was coming, although I didn't let him know it was all done. Will do so tomorrow.
Well, that's all for today. Need to go shower as I spent a fair amount of time in the muck getting Gabriel into the trailer. Took Star back to the pasture, but left Daisy May with Dolly. Hope it keeps the bellowing down :/ First caught Daisy May in the trailer too, and put a collar on her for future. Think it was Pearls' old one. Pity we couldn't preg-check Little Red, but fighting with another Scottish Highland was just too much to contemplate. Maybe next time.
