Had a great day. We've been taking a tonic every morning on an empty stomach, and I'm feeling great. Spent some quality time with my husband, did the chores, then we cooked lunch, together, and we played nice in the kitchen :). Herbie peeled potatoes and made mashed potatoes, I cut onions (every recipe starts with 2 chopped onions) green pepper and garlic, fried up some mushrooms and made a mushroom sauce, yep, from scratch, not out of a can.
Then cut the tenderloin - I think - into steaks and popped them into the hot cast iron griddle I used for the mushrooms. Herbie was cagey about eating the deer so that's why the onions, green pepper and garlic, add some smoked sausage and bourbon BBQ sauce I made and canned. He tastes the deer and agreed it was excellent. I nuked some sweet green peas, he poured me a glass of red, and a glass of raw milk for him and we had a wonderful meal.
I'd made a double batch of koeksister batter before we started cooking as it had to rest for 3 hours before deep frying. Herbie helped me plait them and we stuck them into the deep fryer. That's such a great invention, one that I don't use often but it can be heated to a specific temperature. After we fried the 2 batches, thought it wasn't enough, so I made up another double batch. While I had the oil hot, decided to make vetkoek. Recipe was a yeast one, so needed an hour plus to rise, which worked great time-wise. It rose beautifully, and I fried those babies up. Hmm. Should make a savoury mince to fo with them then we can have them for breakfast.
While waiting for the doughs to rest and rise, I popped 2 jars of apple pie filling I canned last year, made a crust and put an apple pie together. So, have 2 desserts to take with tomorrow, koeksisters and apple pie. Was short an ingredient, but it's sort of an optional, unusual one so I just made it without. Looks good.
Herbie hauled Ellie out of the pasture and nestled her into a hay bed in the shed. I thought she'd be dead, but she has spunk, that girl, while I did the milking. Daisy May knows the routine but I still tie her to Dolly for the walk to the pasture, and sort of chariot-race them up the hill. They gave 3 gallons if milk, so I poured for Melissa today and Jim on Friday. This means I don't have to milk tomorrow. We can leave as soon as we've finished the feeding / watering chores and are cleaned and dressed.
We'll be taking the truck, not Noddy, as although we have rain, and mud, here, the forecast was for up to 6 inches of snow on the East of the State and Herbie doesn't want to risk getting stuck.
Need to go wrap the grand-kiddies gifts, Herbie is already sleeping.
Amy left a plate of cookies, Betsi 2 jars of jam she made :). We are lucky, thank you.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year :).
