Think I may have broken my foot today. Herbie put me to bed butcI think I broke my foot when I fell this afternoon. Gashed my thumb, grazed my other hand and both my knees and after taking my boots off, think I broke my foot. Had whiskey, but I still hurt.

Another cold front moving through, expected to be -3 degrees F on Sunday. Gave all the beasties some corn tonight, to help them keep warm. They also get a treat every month or so, just so they don't forget about the power of the grain bucket
Lambing hasn't started here on the farm yet, for which I'm very thankful. Hoping it's still at least 2 months away. Dolly seems to have gotten over the mastitis, re-medicated her last Friday, so her system is clear of meds now again and I don't have to pour her milk out on the ice. She's not holding weight well this Winter. Maybe I'll get some dried beetroot pulp for her. Lisa is huge already. Nearly as high as Anni, but stockier. Wonder if it's still baby-fat or if she's going to be bigger than her mum. She's a fairly agressive little girl, especially with her mum, although she's learning. She sits, lies down, backs out of the kitchen, goes away when I say enough, waits for me to say OK before eating, goes to the garage and she doesn't piddle in the house. But she has a thing about chewing my gloves, plastic bottles, and a sheared sheep fleece. And she adores Herbie :). Found a dead chicken in the milk girls' outside water trough today. Why is it always a girl ? Those bloody roosters seem to live forever. Then when I got back from buying diesel for the Gila monster, said dead chicken was lying in the driveway. Re-threw it into the woods. Damn dogs ! Egg laying was up for a few days, but this cold seems to seal the hens arses tighter than a castrating band. Although it was sunny this morning, that always helps. The horses / bulls trough only had about 8 inches of ice in it this morning. The chickens sit on the extension cord and pull it out of the wall, meaning the whole electric fence and their deicer doesn't work. So I pulled the while cord a little tighter, wound it around the top of the cage around the planter so that there was enough cord to let it lie on the ground. Hopefully this will stop them dislodging it. Today I baked some chicken thighs in chutney and mayonaise. Herbie loved it. Popped a potato in the oven for him too, then went down to milk. Yesterday I made frikadella in a tomato sauce on vermicelli pasta, the day before fish and chips. Wild caught salmon, potato and sweet potato fries, and South African style onion rings. Shepherds pie the day before, made with the venison John shot on our farm and I canned. Wow, think I've been cooking every day. Still haven't finished our taxes. Think it's my most hated job. |
