It may have dropped to 8 degrees F last night, and the high today of 31 was still below freezing, but the sun was shinning. The chickens ventured out the chicken house, the horses and cows went to the main pasture where the pond is to get the earliest sun. The cows were just standing, chewing the cud, soaking up the warmth.
Saturn, the one boy twin of Liquorice from last year had broken off his left horn. Looks as if it's still attached to a flap of skin but he won't let me close. Been bleeding but other than having a horn swinging in front of his eye, he seems OK. I give him hay on the ground so he doesn't have to push his head through the wire panel.
Watched the geese snow-bath. They dip and preen, all in the snow. Sort of like mimes at work.
Made garlic mashed potatoes, chicken thighs with a rogan rosh sauce with peas and carrots. Herbie said he thought I didn't like peas and carrots together, I don't particularly but he does so I eat them too. First time he's told me that he prefers the ones I make to the bought canned ones as they still have a little crispness to them. The peas are frozen the carrots from fresh. I cook them a little after peeling and dicing them before adding the frozen peas. A pat of butter and a little salt makes them yummy. The garlic was still crunchy too, and there was lots of it. Nothing like made-from-scratch mashed potatoes with Yukon Gold potatoes. I nuked the chicken because he arrived home around 2ish and I was still cooking. Came out tender and juicy. The leftovers should be better tomorrow as I popped it into the oven.
On track to get our new furnace the week after next :) with a little help from my dad. Never thought I'd be excited about a central heating system.
