Herbie complimented me this morning on my all-round ability. Today we gave the cows a hay bale, and then pulled the back plate of the truck bed straighter with ratchet straps. I've helped put a new starter on the big tractor, welded, cut wood and bones, used the plasma cutter - sort of getting into a more comfortable place with his power tools.
Reached 29 degrees yesterday, and 30 today, with 40 expected next week ! Wow, a veritable heat wave is coming. Hope Star waits until then to birth her calf. Checked her again today, looks as if the calf is moving into the birthing position, but she still has a lot of udder development to do.
Today I'm not sure that Anni is even preggers. She looks a little thick, but when I palpitate her tummy I can't feel anything, but then I'm possibly feeling in the wrong place. Was much easier last time when I didn't suspect she was pregnant until she started looking for a birthing spot.
Just seen Rosco go past the window with one of the Scottish Highland calfs' legs in his mouth. Wonder if Anni is eating any ? Took her down yesterday, but although she sniffed at it, she didn't eat any in front of me.
Looking at ordering chicks for this Spring. Not going with the Freedom Rangers again this year, had some leg issues, so going to try Brahmas. Last year we lost about 40 before they were 2 months old, to hawks and other unseen vermin, so I'm not sure how many to order. The prices get cheaper the more you buy, but getting a hundred new littlies is going to be another stinky in the garage. Can't leave them with the other chickens as they get pecked, maybe in the side enclosure ? May delivery sh
