It's been raining, so all the powder snow is now heavy slush. Where we had thrown snow it is slick and icy. When walking outside, I avoid the paths, rather walking on undisturbed snow. I sink down under the crust, but there is no slipping. Works for me. Don't need to fall on any of my still sore spots !
Last night I went down to the basement to turn the drier on for another cycle, and diacovered the basement was flooded. All the rain can't soak into the frozen ground, and it seems to come in from under the lounge. Urrggg. Seemed a little drier this morning, but I still have to put my boots on to venture down there. While jumping from dryish spot to not-so-wet spot, I bumped 2 aromatherapy bottles down and the ylang-ylang bottle broke. So besides the wet, the very strong sweetness makes it difficult to breathe down there.
Gave a fresh bale to the cows this morning and filled up their water troughs tonight. Chopped up some butternut squash for the cows, sheep, chickens and ducks / geese. Only the chickens ate it. They'll all eat apples, but not squash ! Go figure.
Have my 2nd lot of water kefir doing it's 2nd ferment with elderberries. The grains have doubled in quantity, and this lot smelled different, didn't have the sweetness the 1st one did ao I think it's working.
Fetched 2 bales of hay from Mike, and then went and did some shopping. DH asked for one of those ear vacuums so I found one, plus got one of those ear bulbs. He has a sinus infection that affects his hearing, so we've been candling his ears and he wanted to try this. Went to Meijers for some red wine, saw Carrie and her daughter there, then to bank some money at the ATM and on to WalMart for dog and cat food. Decided to stop at Goodwill and whooppee, found the following :
- a clock radio for &3.99 - ours died a week or so ago
- a square cast iron griddle-like pan for $5.99
- a great apple peeler / corer / slicer for $6.99
- dark brown glass jar with lid for $1.99
There was another cast iron thing which had some round holes in it. Not sure what it's used for so didn't buy it. I'm very pleased with the apple machine. Showed it to my DH and he promptly stuck an apple in it and peeled away and shared the sliced apple with me. Hmmm, can't wait to have some apples to dehydrate.
My DH is so funny. The other day he was complaining that there isn't any good pork sausage in the house. Sometime last year, Jackie took me to the Heffron Farm in Belding (I think) and I bought him some pork and apple sausages. I don't do the pork thing (except for bacon) probably due to my upbringing, but I do cook it for him, very occassionally. I usually substitute turkey :). Yep, I cook stuff I've never eaten and don't taste it while cooking or after it's done. So I cooked 2 for him yesterday and today he wanted them with fried apple rings with sugar and cinnamon. OK. I had left over fried chicken, he had sausages, apples, fried English muffins also with sugar and cinnamon and scrambled egg.
I was wanting some chicken so bought some fried pieces from WalMart. They were so horrible. Oily, and completely tasteless. But I still ate it. Think I've been spoilt with our farm chicken ?
