Another short week-end
After milking the cows this morning, I went upstairs and showered and dressed pretty, and we went back to the Flat River in Lowell for brunch. Their food is really good. I had a Reuben, Herbie a Quesadilla which he pronounced excellent. We then wandered back over to Fallassburg for their festival, a lot of local Michigan art. I was driving Noddy, as it's easier to park a little car at a festival than the truck :) we stopped to refuel and then went exploring Belding. Not much there, it used to be a very industrial area, now mainly deserted after stopping for pastry in Smyrna.
Took a few photos of a church, think we both would like some art for our walls, but something that talks to us. So maybe some of my shots could be blown up and make it onto the walls, seeing as we haven't seen anything we really really want.
The cosmos flower above was outside the pastry shop in Smyrna. I love cosmos, reminds me of home. Need to plant some here, but with the chickens, dogs, deer - having pretty things growing is a bit of a challenge.
Lilly, the youngest lamb is not doing well. I de-wormed her on Friday, and this afternoon when we got back I thought she was dead down in the sheep yard. Nope, she moved positions, so I've brought her up to the garage, re-medicated her, given her a bit of Dollys' concoction, and she ate some, syringed her with molassas water, and hope she survives the night. Lost one of the boy lambs late last week, so I'm watching her carefully. She's not a happy girl. Dolly is doing much better. She shouts at me wanting more special rations. I have a new milking routine, separating the calves into the chicken yard with Dolly overnight, milking Daisy May and Eleanor in the morning and then letting the calves nurse, leaving them with their mothers all day to nurse. It's working and I get enough milk for all the herdshare owners and us.
Back down to 3 guinea fowl, there was a dead one last week :( Think it was the 2nd male who was being pecked by one of the others, but not sure. Still have 19 FrankenChickens, they're getting used to me going in to feed them and no longer flee. Their heat lamp globe shattered the other night, and it was the last one I had, so the past night or 2 they've had to do the huddle to keep warm. They're about 3 weeks old, and should be fine. Surely are dirty, stinky birds. Egg laying is way down. Lucky if I find 6 eggs each day, and haven't seen a duck egg in a while, although did see one of the Khaki Campbell girls emerging from under the tarp covering the hay pile under the back trees, so maybe they're laying in there. I haven't investigated. Did find a nest of the guineas, seems old eggs with a few fresher ones. Collected them and put them up in the rafters for the Bantam hen, but although she lays on them sometimes, it's not often enough to actually hatch them.
Well, it's after midnight, and I plan on tackling the kitchen tomorrow while Herbie is at work. Goodnight.
