They enjoyed my feta cheese and the lot of blueberry yoghurt I'd just made, the freshly squeezed apple juice and fresh milk. Herbie made us a huge breakfast yesterday morning. Bacon, eggs, toast, sausage, mushrooms and onions, saute'd potatoes. We were stuffed. Then for dinner, I popped the leg of lamb in the oven, with potatoes, carrots and onions. It was late, 8:30pm, but they loved it. I had it for breakfast this morning as it was too late for me to eat last night. It turned out tender and delicious and was really enjoyed. Even Herbie, who usually sticks to the veggies, had lamb, and then again with me for breakfast. Thora said that a leg of lamb cost over R200 in South Africa now, and that she couldn't afford to eat it anymore. James and Susan bemoaned not finding lamb in North Carolina. Said I could ship :) See how Americanised I'm becoming ? I can ship :)
After they'd left this morning, I realised how different we South Africans are from the Americans. Thora asked me last night if she could strip her bed this morning. Sure. Told her where the laundry chute was in the bathroom cupboard. Down in the laundry today, all her and James and Susans', sheets and towels were waiting for the washing machine, and upstairs, all the blankets, duvets and pillows that weren't used were neatly folded and piled on the bed, awaiting the return of the washed sheets and pillowcases. When I went down to TN, I tried to strip the bed I'd slept in and Karen stopped me. None of the American guests I've entertained have ever stripped a bed. Different cultures.
Herbie got the 1/2 of the hayfield mowed on Sunday, finished Monday, and raked today. Will leave it tomorrow and then rake again on Thursday morning, raking into fewer, larger rows and then bale in the afternoon. It looks beautiful. Herbie spoilt all the beasties today. Loaded up all their feeders with newly cut and raked hay. There was absolute silence on the farm this afternoon, not a baa, neigh or bellow !!
Herbs' friend, Phil-Billy, texted him the other day asking if my relatives had killed us in our sleep. So when James, Susan and Thora arrived, I told them that Herbie had a test to ensure that they were related to me, they had to identify anyone in my parents' wedding video, and if they couldn't they weren't kin and had to leave. They laughed, and said sure, but they had a test for us too. They had a photo of the family at their grandparents house, and if I couldn't identify anyone, they'd know I wasn't kin and they'd leave. I recognised my mother, aunt, grandmother and grandfather :) and Thora recognised everyone in the DVD.
They are lovely people, and we really enjoyed the visit. But it was a long way to drive for just 2 days, so next time they won't bring the camper, and will stay a little longer. We have an invite to visit them too, even with all the beasties as they have 10 acres !
