Had a wonderful afternoon shop-browsing with Jackie. Went to a deli in a Mennonite store seeing as the Saranac Deli has closed down. Oven roasted turkey slices, some cream of wheat, raw sugar, tangerines, and a huge soup ladle. I've had that on my shopping list for over a year and as seen in the photo, it's huge ! Also got a whole box of butternut squash that are going South for the animals for $5. Cut 2 up for the chickens and 2 for the sheep today as it's a good natural de-wormer.
Went to an antique and collectibles emporium, had some nice stuff but, boy, they were not cheap. I found a box of reusable Tattler canning lids for $3, Jackie a stove-top coffee perculator. They had some nice cast iron kitchenware but the frying pans were $25 and up, the griddles $40. I'd like a griddle, another Dutch oven or 2, some bake-ware, a potjie or 3 in different sizes. OK, I want lots more :)
Then we popped in to a cute quilting shop where they had free coffee / tea / hot chocolate and cookies. I think Jackie knows all the places that offer free coffee in the State ! Off to the cheese factory, just made it before they closed. 5lbs sharp white cheddar cheese - check. Added a chunk of bleu, and a jug of buttermilk. Think I'll surprise DH with something baked. Not saying here as he sometimes reads this and then it won't be a surprise !
A quick stop at SavALot and then we went past her MILs place where her DH and BIL were moving the washing machine and drier to a room upstairs so had to add plumbing and electricity.
Together we carried the box of sqush into the house, and I foolishy used my left hand so have re-hurt that arm. And I was so careful when we carried it from the shop to the car ! Got home after dark, so went and closed the chicken house, only found 3 eggs, and watered the cows. Had to check up on the sheep as they were so completely silent I wasn't sure they were still there.
Yippee. My Water Kefir (WK) grains arrived in the mail. That's why I bought the raw sugar today. Can't wait to get kefir. Want DH to drink it as well as it's so healing to the gut. He asked me if it was going to taste like the hibiscus tea. He didn't enjoy that.
Put clean sheets on the bed after midnight. Really need to do that earlier in the day.
Today went to fetch another 2 bales of hay from Mike, picked up the mail, watered the cows while it was still daylight (progress?), watered the chickens seeing as it's so cold they're not venturing outside the coop, emptied the sheep trough and re-filled it with fresh water as they had so much vegetable matter (VM) in the water it was murky. Only 3 eggs today again, but I've seen Rosco going into the enclosure, although I haven't seen him going into the actual chicken house, but wonder about the dogs and the eggs. They are eating a deer from the side woods, DH found a bloody antler with some head attached, and Rosco has had a bloody muzzle for a few days. Anni is much neater. She also spends more time with me.
Expecting another storm coming through on Monday where the expected high is going to be 2 degrees F ! The low with the wind-chill is expected in the - 40 range. Brrr. At the bottom of the TV screen there is a Winter Storm Warning with a map and all the places that are closed due to the weather.
Sent out chatty e-mails to some friends I haven't corresponded with recently.
Have been seaoning my new cast iron pans, together with the old one and the Dutch oven. They are turning from gray to smooth, shiny black.
